Special Collections, which is located on the third floor of Fogler Library will host a Research Open House on Friday, October 23, from 2:00-3:30PM, with brief remarks at 2:30PM.
Fogler Library Special Collections archivists Matthew Revitt and Herbert Dittersdorf will showcase unique archival material that University of Maine faculty and students have used in their research and classes to create and share new historical knowledge. The highlighted research projects include rare 17th-century books used by Professor Joel Anderson’s undergraduate capstone course for the History major—such as a project on 17th-century English reading habits. History doctoral candidate Susan Dickson-Smith’s research on Black churches in Maine and New Brunswick. Rare Wabanaki primary sources and tribal newsletters examined in Professor Micah Pawling’s courses. The open house will share items from the O’Brien Collection of African History and Culture that informed Professor Mary Freeman’s recently published book as well as her work with students on the history of abolition. Finally, Professor Liam Riordan and his undergraduates will share their public history research using material from Special Collections about the University of Maine, the Bangor-Orono region, and the commemorations of 1876 and 1976.
