Bus leaves from Buchanan Alumni House

At UMaine’s Virtual Environment and Multimodal Interaction (VEMI) Lab, we’re not just creating technology—we’re creating a better, more accessible world for everyone. You’ll get a behind-the-scenes look at the groundbreaking research that’s putting UMaine on the national stage.

What you’ll experience:

Ride the MOISIN: Take a spin in our custom-built, multi-person autonomous vehicle simulator. The first of its kind, the MOISIN (Multimodal Omnidirectional Immersive Simulator for Inclusive Navigation) will transport you into a realistic, virtual world where we’re pioneering the future of self-driving cars for all.

See the AVA project in action: Discover how our award-winning Autonomous Vehicle Assistant (AVA) smartphone technology is making self-driving cars accessible to older adults and those with visual impairments. This is the very same project that won a federal prize and earned us an invitation to the White House!

Explore student-driven research: Meet the brilliant undergraduate and graduate students who are at the heart of the VEMI Lab’s mission. Learn how they’re developing innovative solutions for real-world problems, from creating multisensory interfaces for STEM education to designing systems that help people with disabilities navigate their environment.

Go beyond the classroom: See how VEMI’s “people-first philosophy” transforms academic learning into hands-on, impactful research. The work we do here isn’t just theory—it’s about making a tangible difference in people’s lives.

This isn’t just a tour; it’s an opportunity to witness the cutting edge of human-computer interaction and see how UMaine is shaping the future, one accessible innovation at a time.

Registration required – space is limited – Bus leaves Buchanan Alumni House at 11:50am.
