From the Acadian music of Van Buren to the mill songs of Lewiston and the songs of the lumbering camps along the Penobscot River, the traditional folk music of Maine reflects the vibrant diversity of our state. In this lecture, folk songs from a wide variety of geographical locations in Maine will be performed, and the historical context of these songs will be explored.
In addition, the current state of traditional music in Maine will be addressed, and the ways that this music is being passed along to the next generation. Through summer festivals, camps, organizations and informal gatherings, the proud and profound heritage of Maine’s diverse folk music continues.
