October 15 | 4:00 PM

Professor of History Liam Riordan
Adelaide & Alan Bird

The current bicentennial moment has heightened public interest about the relatively distant statehood era from the 1780s to the 1820s. This provides an opportunity to better align the work of professional historians with intense popular interest about the past (made manifest in local historical societies and the recent explosion of history podcasts). This illustrated lecture explores central aspects of the statehood era that remain familiar in Maine today. It aims to bridge what sometimes seems to be an imposing gulf that separates popular and scholarly understandings of the past.

Sponsored by the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences. The Maine Heritage Lecture showcases research and creative work about the state of Maine, with particular emphasis on Maine’s sense of place, history, diverse cultures, society, and policy.

A Presentation with Dr. Habib Dagher

With 260 employees, the Advanced Structures and Composites Center (ASCC) is the largest University-based research Center in the State of Maine. Join us for this presentation that will discuss two cutting-edge technologies developed at ASCC of significance to the State and the country.

Floating offshore wind technology to heat homes and power cars. Harnessing just 3% of the offshore wind resource in the Gulf of Maine will allow us to electrify heating and transportation in the state. Maine’s offshore wind resource is effectively in deep water requiring the use of floating wind turbine technologies. UMaine’s Volturn US floating concrete hull technology just received $100 million investment commitments from two global heavyweights: RWE and the Diamond Generating Corp., a subsidiary of the Mitsubishi Corporation. Come hear about the plans to install a 10-12MW prototype off the coast of Maine.  UMaine has over 50 patents on technology and secured a further $50 million investment from the US DOE.

The largest polymer 3D printer in the world which was installed at UMaine in September 2019, earning 3 Guinness World records, including for the largest 3D printed boat and the largest polymer 3D printer.  In September 2019, it was used to print a 5,000 lbs, 25 ft long patrol vessel in about 70 hours.  Come hear about potential planned applications of the printer.
